We Totally Earned That Win

(Calm down, it's sarcasm.)

I hated how this game ended.  How am I supposed to enjoy the win given the circumstances?  It reminds me of the time I slept with my mother-in-law.  Yeah, the sex was fee nominal, but then your wife sleeps with your dad to get back at you, and then your father keeps reminding you at holiday dinners and what started as an innocent little head butt leads to a French-Canadian slap fight to end all slap fights.

God, those nachos look tasty.  (AP Photo / Matt York)

Why can't the NBA have a little foresight with these situations?  You know, if a player gets cut in the last five minutes of a playoff game the team can take a full time out that is extended to five minutes to allow for stitching.  Who would be against this rule?  The Spurs, as voiced by Robert Horry, certainly aren't happy with how things played out:

You feel bad for the guy because you want to have the best team out there at the end of the game, and he wasn't out there.

See, we feel bad.  We're sorry.  And that 3rd foul on Stoudemire?  That was bad, too.  That's a no call even in the preseason, not to mention the playoffs.  And it forced you to open the second half with Marion on Duncan, and we all know how that turned out.

Sex-ay!  (AP Photo / Matt York)

And that foul on Barbosa in the last minute?  The whole one free throw plus the ball thing?  That sucked, but them's the rules.  Dumb rules, sure, but rules nonetheless.  It certainly looked like a foul at full speed, so you can't really blame the refs.  Again I look towards the NBA powers that be for some foresight.  It's one thing if Boris Diaw is humping Duncan's leg 40' from the inboundser, but Parker, a 7X% free throw shooter as he's running to the ball?  That's a simple two shot foul.  Really, it's not that difficult to figure out.  I've laid it all out for you, and I'm not even a full-fledged genius.

My favoritest part of the game came when Mark Jackson was going on and on about how flexible Marion was on defense.  On one possession he was guarding Duncan, the next Parker.  Mark Jackson, who's from New York by the way, was like, way impressed.  The whole thing cracked me up; apparently Mark Jackson missed the fact that both Parker and Duncan got whatever they wanted the whole time Marion was guarding them.  But hey, Marion was assigned to each of them at different times so hey!  That's amazing!  I'm going to assign this here garden hose the duty of doing my taxes!  Behold!  It's the wonderous IRS-handling water hose!  Never been audited!  Never kinks!  Steady water flows or it will double your refund!

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
lol, 3 wins closer to round 3. I am totally expecting a better performance in game 2. Especially on the pick and roll defense.

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
What a great game! I specially enjoy the part of actually watching a complete playoff game due to normal time for us in Europe. Tim was amazing, Tony was amazing, Finley and Horry are really stepping up.

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
this game made me so frustrated. i wanted to cry. i felt like a little kid who was done wrong by power outside of his reach. i smsed my friend telling him i dont want to watch anymore nba games.

so matt thanks for being half decent about it. although i was not sure if you were just rubbing it in.

one thing i noticed, that you people probably know, winy tim duncan look to ref. he didn't say anything, but it was like, you see how he hits me in my arm, and you, you didn't do anything, i cant beleive, i am so disapointed with your behaviour... argh.

nba has to find a way to deal with flops, but more importantly with calls in general. i don't care how, i don't know if it's possible, but they have to try. this really sucks. it does.

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
oh and luzy searching for nba torrents on google. it's really fine way too see games, half a day to day late, but so what. you miss commercials, so it's way more enjoyable to watch.
a lot of games are in english, although some are in Chinese (type) language, so i get situations where i am yelling at my monitor, Chinese guy is yelling back and my wife walks in and is shocked. i tell her "you should've knocked" if anyone saw movie little children.

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
hehe thanks man, i did found a couple of sites, that offer decent torrents, but still too few for my taste :). Sucks to live in another time zone.

You know i could watch every game if it would be normal hour, because (i'm sure no legal of course) there are people who are streaming their ABCs, ESPNs, TNTs... on the internet, and if you have decent connection (which i do :) ), one can watch every game. And with american commentators, which i just adore (no sarcasm). But in order to do that, i would have to be unemployed and rich. But then again, i could watch the games courtside if i was rich :).

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
hm, living in serbia connection is a problem. i have 512, which is not enough. and i had no idea people stream american sports station. cool.

anyway, i find torrents of pretty much all games, i don't think i missed a single game from first round - all games of nj tor, gs dal, uta hou, mia chi. and plus some of dev sa...

but yes, it has had a huge effect on my work, and family. and not very good one.

i have a similar opinion of american commentators, they tend to be kinda fake, artificial, and annoying, but they are not plain dumb and without any knowledge of game like most serbian ones are.

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
I felt the same way during that game.  I hate feeling like we were "helped out" by the refs, and I hated the fact we were about to beat a Nash-less (better known as help-less) team going down the stretch until...I saw that Phoenix really had no interest in winning that game.  I know that we have had problems winning games in the final few minutes without Timmy, take (i forgot if it was game 3 or 4) last years series with Dallas when Tim fouled out ( I guess its better to be helped out by the refs than screwed over), ya Manu screwed that last play up, but at least he tried.  Phoenix didn't even try - those last few awfull shot attempts by Amare, that ill-advised 3 by Barbosa, then that foul on Tony - which i agree should have a 2 shot foul or even a no call but Barbosa had his forearm into Tony and Tony had the where with all to fall.  So I wish Nash was in there but you can credit the 5 Suns that did play in giving that win to the Spurs more than the Spurs just beating up on a Nash-less Suns team.

I forgot to mention that i really enjoyed watching jacque vaughn do his best Nick Van-Exel impression.  Good stuff.

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
Why does no one mention the bogus charging foul called on Tony near the end when Bell's foot was clearly on the line in the restricted zone (to mention only one crummy call)? That could easily have changed the outcome. Perhaps more importantly, the Suns had Nash for all but 48 seconds of the game. If his presence was so crucial in affecting the outcome, then they should have been so far ahead that the final minute would have been meaningless.

by agutierrez on May 7, 2007 9:21 AM CDT   0 recs

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
That charging call on Tony may have been incorrect, but even when seeing the replay, it was just barely seen, that his foot was on the line. i don't think it was clearly seen, specially if you consider how fast the game is. It's not like it was obvious! There are no teams in the league that can play SA in the playoffs and go far ahead as you suggested Suns should do, given the fact that Nash played 47 minutes and 12 seconds!

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
What the hell is all this talk about Phoenix not "playing with urgency" or "not wanting it bad enough". So what? Is that the Spurs fault? I got news for the Suns apologists out there, that performance from us yesterday was a C+. B- on the offensive end, but a D- on the defensive end, we can play better and we are gonna prove it tomorrow night.

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
read this on truehoop:

the suns were -12 when nash was in the game, and +4 with barbosa. maybe last night was not his night, and the lost 48 seconds weren't the make it or break it scenario some think? on the other hand, the guy's fucking clutch, and no matter what he did the previous 2 and a half hours, you have to think he would bring it for the finish. it was so awesome how much nash wanted to get out there and play. did ya'll see him trying to hide the blood flow by casually wiping it on his jersey? what a baller.

you ain't a beauty but hey you're all right.

I'm also a big fan of his. It doesn't hurt that he's a decent person too. Well, at least what i can tell from the interviews and stuff i read about him.

Re: We Totally Earned That Win
Why? Because i'm a fan of Steve Nash?! What a ridicolous question.

Ha i just remembered Tim being interviewed at the end of the game:
"Tim, in one word, how important it is for you to win the first game on the road?"

"It's....very-important"
